Houses - Bruton Tripod
Set in woodland with long views across the landscape, this elevated hillside house is an example of a whole life approach to environmental sustainability – minimal footprint on the ground, made of durable plant-based materials wherever possible, designed as a lightweight kit of prefabricated components, detailed for easy on-site dry-jointed assembly, low in embodied and operational carbon, and designed for disassembly and recovery of materials at the end of the building’s life. Plan and section are carefully tailored to suit each function, and to provide a range of specific environments and relationships to the rural context.
The design has been developed in collaboration with FOLD engineers and specialist timber subcontractor Wooden House, and the proposal forms an integral part of a broader Woodland Management Strategy developed by Urquhart & Hunt to address ash die-back.
