GRANITE FUTURES
CSK Architects and The Bartlett UCL are developing a design to re-use approx. 400no. large blocks of granite from Victoria Embankment. The stone was originally part of Joseph Bazalgette’s world-famous urban infrastructure from the C19th, and has been removed from the river wall as part of the Tideway project to build a new super sewer under the Thames.
The proposal will re-use the granite blocks in their current form as part of a whole life approach to environmental sustainability, delivering an exemplary Cradle to Cradle and Circular Economy case study. The project is being developed in collaboration with Westminster Council and Arts University Bournemouth, with consultancy provided by The Stonemasonry Company Ltd and Webb Yates Engineers.
